Del.icio.us is 5 years old…Time for a cleanup?
Can you believe that Delicious is 5 years old already? To this date Delicious is gathering 5.3 million users and contains more than 180 million unique tagged URLs. When the bookmark sharing website was getting more and more popular, I could not figure out what the fuzz was all about. Why on earth would I share my bookmarks? Who cares about my personal favorites huh? Then, as I was playing with the web service I realized that there was much more to be done with this simple idea. Not only am I able to access my personal favorites from any computer, but what I have been using the most is the linkroll tool. Over here, I use it on the [elsewhere] category in the sidebar and it enables me to create a linkblog. Because it’s free, light, movable and not tied to a personal databasis, to this day, I have never found a better solution.
Now I believe it would be about time to clean up the Yahoo! network. Before Yahoo! acquired Delicious on December 9th 2005, the Search department tried to build a similar service with My Web. That was in June 2005. Since both products are exactly the same, one may wonder why Yahoo! is still keeping the two services. I believe that My Web could as well have been closed and Yahoo! could have come up with a tool to import a user’s favorites to a brand new Delicious account…just like they did for the migration from Yahoo! Photos to Flickr. I say it once again, a simple Yahoo-branded stylesheet would be enough to really integrate Delicious into the Yahoo! network.
Even more confusing, on October 26th 2006, the Yahoo! Search Blog announced a new version of the Yahoo! Bookmarks service, a place where users store online their web treasures. Huh ok so where should the user go then? I used to have all my stuff on Yahoo! Bookmarks, then I moved to My Web then to Delicious…all this way to get back to a new version of Yahoo! Bookmarks? Obviously, it does not make sense…and here comes the peanut butter. As they tried to fix things up, Yahoo! integrated My Web right inside Yahoo! Bookmarks… which means that all three sites may be used to share those bookmarks.
That’s a lot of time wasted. A lot of confusion.
And once again, a simple Yahoo-branded stylesheet in the Delicious option would have done it…
